David Gilbert

David Fanton Gilbert, age 90, of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, died on Saturday, August 20, 2022 at Chester County Hospital from the many ills of old age.  He was the husband of Frances Laws Gilbert, with whom he shared 68 years of marriage.  Born in Toledo, Ohio, he was the son of the late Lucille and LeRoy Gilbert.

A tall, handsome guy, new ninth-grader at Haverford High, basketball player.  Fran watched him and thought him pretty nice!  He finally asked her for a date in the fall of twelfth grade and they were married five years later.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 – 1956, worked at the DuPont Company until 1994, and then taught safety seminars for DuPont for another 10 years.  David was a willing volunteer, serving on the vestry, superintendent of Church School, and reading lessons at various Episcopal churches.  He was an instructor at After the Bell, and other groups serving youth.  One of the most important was organizing and overseeing youth instrumental and vocal competitions sponsored by the Kennett Symphony Orchestra and hosted by Kendal at Longwood.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his three children, Lesley Natalie, David Gilbert, Jr., and Betsy Benner; his brother Donald Gilbert; three grandchildren, Andrew, Stephanie, and David; and two great-grandchildren, Joshua and Brody.
