   Helen Virginia Griffith, age 89, of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away on October 5, 2024 at her nephew’s home in Cochranville, PA surrounded by family. Born in Wilmington, DE she was the daughter of the late John Griffith and the late Helen V. Griffith.

   Helen graduated from Conrad High School in 1952.  After highschool, Helen worked various secretarial jobs in the Wilmington area until joining the family business, S G Williams & Bros. Co., where she worked as the corporate secretary until her retirement in 1999.  After many years of night classes, Helen graduated from the University of Delaware with a bachelor’s degree in English in 2000.

   Helen was caring, friendly, and generous. Helen did not have children of her own, but she treated her nieces and nephews as such. When her father died in 1980, she moved in with her mother and cared for her until her death in 1995. Helen was friendly with all. She had many lifelong friends and many that were picked up along the way. Helen generously donated to many charities throughout her life and she was generous with her time, teaching Sunday School, teaching the English language, and teaching poetry classes.

   She loved nature and in particular, bird watching. She was a lifelong member of the DOS which is the Delaware Ornithological Society, or as her father jokingly called it, Ducks on Stilts. She was also an avid writer who authored many popular children’s books.

   Helen was a lifelong Christian and a member of various Methodist churches during her life. Her legacy will be her writings and the many lives she touched with her friendship and love.

   She is survived by one brother, John D. Griffith and his wife, Julia Hope Yarbrough of West Grove; two nephews, John D. Griffith, Jr. and his wife, Michelle S. Griffith of Cochranville and Joseph Griffith Yarbrough of West Grove; two nieces, Natalie Griffith of Newport, DE and Mary Griffith of Salt Lake City, UT and many grandnieces and grandnephews and their families. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, David H. Griffith; a nephew, David C. Griffith; and her longtime companion, Jack Worrell.

   You are invited to visit with Helen’s family and friends from 10:00a.m. – 11:00a.m., Monday, October 14, 2024 at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 2313 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE 19803. Her funeral service will follow at 11:00a.m. Interment will be in Silverbrook Cemetery, 3300 Lancaster Pike, Wilmington, DE 19805.
