John Pusey

June 24, 1939 — December 7, 2020

Kennett Square

John Watkin Pusey, age 81, of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, died in his home after a battle with ALS on Monday, December 7, 2020.  He was the husband of Suzanne Brosius Pusey, with whom he shared 56 years of marriage.  Born in West Grove, PA, he was the son of the late E. Frank Pusey and the late Lulu (Dolly) Watkin Pusey.

John graduated from George School in 1957 and went on to study at Earlham College.  After graduation in 1961 he joined the Army and served two years of active duty and three in the reserves.  In the late 1960s, John, along with his brother-in-law, Newt Brosius, took over their respective fathers’ interests in the insurance agency Pusey, Brosius & Watson. By 1970 they bought out Steve Watson’s interest and acquired other local agencies, to form Pusey & Brosius, Inc.  and served the community for the next 22 years.

John enjoyed spending time with his family, coaching his children’s sports teams, especially Little League Baseball and yearly beach trips to Ocean City and Avalon, NJ.  He was an active member of the Kennett Square Golf & Country Club for over 50 years and served on their Pro-Am Tournament committee that raises money for local charities.  John loved a good game of cards, not just the thrill of playing the dealt hand, but the friendships formed through Bridge Club, Men’s Poker Night and the 19th Hole.  His love of watching and playing golf was no secret, and he was fortunate to see many major tournaments. An Eagles and Phillies fan, each Sunday a football game or golf was always on the TV.  He enjoyed spending time at the Little Bucket cabin whether it be hunting season with the guys or with family and friends tailgating at a Penn State game.

John and Suzanne loved to travel alone or with family and friends.  They’ve sailed through the Greek and Virgin Islands, traversed the Panama Canal, explored numerous countries in Europe and took their two oldest grandsons to snorkel in the Galapagos. In 2014, for their 50th Anniversary, they took a trip of lifetime to Africa.

John began his service to his community as young Boy Scout, eventually earning his Eagle Scout rank.  He continued his involvement in the community by serving as an officer in the Kennett Lions Club, long time member of the London Grove Meeting and overseer of the Penn’s Grove Quaker Meeting, a driver for the Kennett Food Cupboard, volunteer golf coach for Kennett After-the-Bell, and was the Treasurer of the Anson B. Nixon Park committee in its infancy.  John was recently recognized by the Union Hill Cemetery Company, where he enjoyed his daily walk, for his 20 plus years of service.

In addition to his wife, Suzanne, he is survived by his son, John (Jay) Watkin Pusey, Jr. and his wife, Candice, and son, Ian;  daughter Margaret (Meg) Lawrence and her husband, Brian, and their children, Jack and Sarah; daughter Meredith Rodriguez and her husband, Pablo, and their children Marcos, Lucas, Julia, Jennifer, Christopher and Jesse; and his brother, E. Frank Pusey, Jr. and his wife Min.

John fought his illness with courage, grace and a sense of humor, always determined to make the best of a difficult situation.  On a daily basis, he thanked his caregivers and expressed his sincere appreciation.  The family would like to extend a special thank you to John’s caregivers and Penn Medicine Hospice for their generosity and care of him during the past year. John will be buried at London Grove Friends Meeting at a private graveside ceremony. The service will be recorded and posted here within 24 hours after the service.
