Katherine Kennedy Sherman, age 95, of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, passed away on Friday, February 17, 2023 at Chester County Hospital in West Chester, Pennsylvania. She was the wife of the late Leonard M. Sherman who died in 2014 and with whom she shared 61 years of marriage.
Born in Boston, MA she was the daughter of Norman Fullerton Kennedy and Doris Devereaux Kennedy. She grew up in Westport, Connecticut, with the exception of a few years during the depression when her family lived in Edison Park, Florida. Her mischievous nature was evident early on, and she enjoyed sparring with her brother, the late Norman D. Kennedy in childhood and throughout their adult lives. She was also adventurous, and received a solo pilot's license for a seaplane she flew as a teenager.
Katherine graduated from Western College for Women (now Miami University of Ohio) with a BA in history. Immediately after graduation, she went to work for ABC in New York for several years, followed by a lengthy trip to the west coast, during which she broke a number of hearts at dude ranches along the way.
In 1952, she married Leonard Sherman, the love of her life, and moved to Wilmington, Delaware for Leonard’s new job at DuPont. In 1963, they moved to Pennsylvania and built their “dream” house, and became deeply involved in the community. It was here that she discovered the second love of her life – golf, and joined Leonard on rounds, and was a member of her cherished 9-hole group.
While she would sometimes remark that she had outlived all her friends, that was not quite true, as she continued to make new friends at Crosslands throughout her time there. She enjoyed bridge, bible study, and birds – both living and in her collection of bird ornaments. She was also an avid gardener. Kathy was a longtime member of the Episcopal Church of the Advent in Kennett Square.
She is survived by her daughter, Leslie Gaske (Philip) of Henderson NV; her son Alden Sherman (Aleta) of Niwot CO; grandchildren Matthew Gaske, Alison Gaske Sherman, Dennis Gaske, and Justine Sherman.
A memorial service will be held at 11AM on Saturday June 3, 2023 at the Episcopal Church of the Advent, 401 N. Union St. Kennett Square, PA 19348. A reception will follow in the church gathering room. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to either the Kennett Area Senior Center, 427 S. Walnut Street, Kennett Square, PA 19348, or online at https://kennettseniorcenter.org/donate/ or the Kennett Library online at https://kennettlibrary.org/donate/.
